Win a Year of Free Books

A year of free books? Unlike Aladdin’s story, there’s no genie required for this wish. Although we don’t have magic carpets to take us to exotic places, we do have books, and I’m excited to share about my publisher’s unique giveaway which might just open a whole new world to you.

That has been my experience with books. You see, as a child, I devoured most of my local library’s Nancy Drew series and borrowed unashamedly from my Aunt’s personal collection. On an ongoing basis, my mom had my brothers and me participating in the Book It program where we earned personal pan pizzas through Pizza Hut. Those were good days!

Today, I’ve expanded from Nancy Drew to books that not only entertain, but also deepen my faith, challenge my personal walk, and simply teach me things I wouldn’t otherwise know. Right now, I’m seeking to grow my conversations with God with the help of  A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller. I’m also feeling personally challenged through Eric Liddell’s life story (post Olympic fame) in his biography, The Final Race, by Eichinger and Everson. In addition to non-fiction, I’ve also recently enjoyed fiction by Becky Wade and Melanie Dobson. (Hint: A great way to get book recommendations from friends is through Goodreads.)

Yes, there are other ways to learn and grow, but books are mere fingertips away whether they’re paperback or electronic. Plus, summer is the ideal time to choose reading that interests you instead of school-required texts.

A Different Kind of Giveaway

This year, my publisher Write Integrity Press is doing something different with our annual giveaway. Instead of giving away a specific number of books or a grand prize, we’re giving away an annual subscription to Kindle Unlimited (an $80 value). So many books, including my own, are available through this Amazon subscription service, so the sky is really the limit with your reading list.

Already have Kindle Unlimited? Then this giveaway would make a fabulous gift for a friend or family member.

To enter and for more information, click here.

Whether you win or not, I hope you’re encouraged to find your next great read and learn something new this summer. Books truly can open a whole new world if we just take the time to open the cover.

Come Adventure with Me! Italy in Real Life and Fiction

Starting next week, I’m traveling to Italy with my friend and colleague. Among other mouth-watering destinations, we’ll be exploring some of the settings for the final book in The Rogues trilogy, which include Orvieto and the Port of Civitavecchia. I can’t wait to share these places in real life with you and then take you into my heroine’s fictional story where she experiences them in her dystopian world.

Can you believe we’ve been on this trilogy adventure together since 2016 when I first signed my contract with Write Integrity Press? The cover reveal for The Reactionary will be coming soon, but for now, you can preview Portia’s climactic adventure.

Maybe you haven’t dived into Portia’s story yet. No worries. You have a few months before book three releases to catch up on the action. And this month, if you read and share your review about The Revisionary or The Revolutionary on Amazon and tag me in a social media post about it, I’ll enter you into my summer book challenge giveaway. (Maybe I’m in denial, but I’m not counting summer as over until the end of this month.) Bonus points if you review both or participate in the original summer book challenge.

Oh, what’s the giveaway? So glad you asked. It’s an autographed paperback copy of The Reactionary once it releases next year. (A winner outside the U.S. will receive a Kindle copy.)

Wherever We Go

As I’m hustling through all the last-minute trip preparation, I need to pause and remember: This trip isn’t about me. Yes, it’s a huge blessing and opportunity that has me antsy with anticipation. But at the end of the day, whatever I do and wherever I go, I want to shine God’s love and light.

No, this isn’t a mission trip by any means, but are we not always to represent Christ? Who knows whose paths I’m going to cross. My hope is that I’ll represent Christ well even if I’m tired, anxious, or inconvenienced.

Bottom Line: I’d appreciate your prayers during this trip and would love for you to share in this European adventure with me. I’ll be updating my Instagram stories @kristenhogrefeauthor and on Facebook, and you’re invited to follow me there.

Happy reading, safe travels, and adventure on!

The Revolutionary: Coming March 2018

If you’ve started a reading list for 2018, I hope you’ll add The Revolutionary! Mark your calendars: The sequel to The Revisionary is scheduled to release March 20 through Write Integrity Press, and today, I’m excited to share the cover with you. Special thanks to my graphic artist Kelli Sorg (Make it Snappy) for another job well done!

Portia’s story continues much differently than she had imagined. There’s no hero’s rescue for her or easy solutions to save the Brotherhood’s threadbare rebellion. The Revolutionary demands an honest look at:

  • The source of one’s true identity
  • The struggle of guilt
  • The crippling effects of fear
  • The power of second chances

Summary

REVOLUTIONS RUN ON SACRIFICE … AND BLOOD.

Three months a satellite prisoner, Portia wonders if the Brotherhood has left her to die—until she plunges into the domain of a smuggler contacted by her brother. But her rescue comes with a price tag, and now, she must forfeit her identity to act as a spy. She learns that her enemies want the Dome to approve mass satellite executions, though no one knows why. Worse, they’re using her friend Luther, now a Court Citizen intern, to sign the short-term orders. She wants to confide in Luther, but can she still trust him with the company he keeps?

Plagued by shadows and guilt for leaving her protector Gath behind on the satellite, Portia must find a way, not only to rescue him and the other prisoners, but also to destroy the slave camps once and for all.

The Revisionary Cover: An Unlikely Story

We all like unwrapping presents on our birthdays. For my birthday this year, I wanted to “unwrap” something my readers could enjoy with me.

So, I asked my editor Marji if I could share my new book cover with my readers today, and she said yes!

I can’t wait to share the story “inside” the cover with you on June 6 (release day), but today, there’s another story to tell. It’s the one that made this cover possible and one that began in an unlikely place.

The Story behind the Cover

The year was 2007.

I had recently graduated from college and started a job at a marketing company. A few cubicles over from my station sat Kelli, a graphic designer who soon became my friend.

On her screen, she made “magic,” my word for it looks amazing but I have no idea how you did that. (Trust me. Making a safety product catalog look exciting takes skill.) Anyone could see Kelli put her heart into her work. I thought to myself: If she can make a safety catalog appear that incredible, what can she do with a creative project like a book cover?

At the time, I was working on my second book and wanted to use Amazon’s CreateSpace  to publish. This platform offered me the flexibility to upload my own book cover or have someone on Amazon’s team design it.

But I didn’t want a stranger designing my cover. I wanted a friend, and I was confident Kelli could capture my vision. On the side, she did some freelance work, so I shared my idea with her.

Then, she worked her “magic,” not once, but twice—designing the covers for both my second and third books in the Wings of the Dawn trilogy.

A New Leaf

Since then, Kelli and I have both moved on in our careers and lives. She’s married with a darling little boy and has also started her own design business called Make It Snappy.

When I signed with Write Integrity Press for my new trilogy, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to work with Kelli again. Publishing houses typically prefer their own design teams.

But I decided to ask anyway, and to my delight, my editor approved for me to work with Kelli. We would then review her designs together and go from there.

That brainstorming meeting at Panera was electric. Kelli and I were bursting with creative energy and ideas. We received our share of stares from other guests, wondering what all the buzz was about.

Today, you get to find out.

Gratitude and a Parting Challenge

With deep gratitude to my friend Kelli and editor Marji, I’m thrilled to present the cover for Rogues, Book 1: The Revisionary.

Looking back, I can see how God worked in my ordinary circumstances, allowing me to build relationships that would have a direct bearing in my writing journey. Kelli’s story is just one of many I could share.

Maybe your current situation isn’t ideal. Maybe you’d rather be someplace else. I encourage you to make the most of the relationships and opportunities, limited though they may seem, that are before you. You never know how your current experiences will shape the future God has in store.

4 Countdowns for YA Fiction Fans

We Americans like a good countdown. We count as the ball drops on New Year’s Eve. Students (and teachers) count the days to summer break. Couples count their calendars for the “big day” or a baby’s arrival.

In Florida’s Space Coast, people visit Cape Canaveral and wait hours for a front row seat at a shuttle launch. (To date, I haven’t experienced a launch first hand, but the pictures look incredible.)

Maybe you’ve never seen a rocket launch either. However, if you’re a fan of young adult (YA) fiction, I’d like to invite you to a “launch” of a different kind for my upcoming release, The Revisionary.

Countdown #1: The Revisionary Cover Reveal

I can’t wait to share the cover design for The Revisionary and the story that goes along with it!

Eight days and counting …

Countdown #2: ASU Flag Design Contest

I teach English for Alpha Omega Academy and have invited students to design their version of the ASU pennant (the fictitious flag of my dystopian society). The top 10 designs will be posted right here on my blog for you to vote on. The winner’s name and design will be published in the book itself!

Look for more details at the end of April.

Countdown #3: Pre-Order Dates and Bonus Feature

You can pre-order The Revisionary as early as May 2! Those who pre-order Kindle versions will also receive an extra bonus story, a short novelette that gives you a glimpse into my heroine’s childhood and sets the stage for book one.

I’ll post more details in May.

Countdown #4: Launch Date

On Tuesday, June 6, both print and electronic versions of The Revisionary release.

If you want to join these “countdowns” with me, what can you do?

  • Share posts, updates, and pictures (like the one here) with your friends. If you’re not a teen, that’s okay! Although I wrote this book for young adults readers, I like to say I also write for “the young at heart” (and include myself in that category).
  • In the next few months, several people will review my book, and I’ll share links to their reviews. Pass those along, please.
  • When you get your own copy, I want to hear from you! Tag me in a picture with you and your book. Leave an Amazon review, and share it with your friends.
  • Closer to the launch date, I’ll create a Facebook event for an online launch party. I’d love for you to join! Connect with me on my Facebook page so I can invite you.

Countdowns are better with friends! Will you join me?

The Revisionary: New YA Fiction Coming Soon – @kjhogrefe (Click to Tweet)

The Revisionary – Coming June 2017

revisionary-1I have two exciting announcements today! First, I want to congratulate the winner of the random drawing for the Women of Faith books.

Drum roll, please. The winner is … Trudy!

Thank you to everyone who participated! Remember, even if you didn’t win, you can still get these outstanding resources on Amazon or elsewhere. Also, I’ll be doing several more giveaways this year that you won’t want to miss.

Now, for my second big announcement: In partnership with Write Integrity Press, I’m thrilled to share some details about my new young adult fiction novel, releasing this spring!

The Revisionary is a dystopian suspense story laced with American history and flashbacks to its Judeo-Christian heritage. Unlike my first trilogy, which was staged in contemporary times, The Revisionary begins in a futuristic civilization, the remnants of what once was called the United States of America.

The Revisionary: Genre and Preview

A dystopia is the reverse of a utopia (ideal society), and this genre implies that all is far from right in the setting. In 2149, the American Socialists United (ASU) is a technologically barren land cut off from the outside world. Citizens in most squares eke out their existence in cube communities, remotely grateful they survived post-Apocalyptic conditions and painfully aware they owe their lives and fidelity to the Friend appointed by the Dome to rule.

At graduation, young adults receive their work assignments within their squares, except for an elite few selected for their undergraduate achievements. These draftees must report for selective training at the Crystal Globe University and ultimately, service in positions of leadership in the Dome or elsewhere.

The draft brings personal prestige and advancement for the graduate’s family, and no one dares defy it—no one, that is, except for Portia Abernathy’s brother. His rebellion condemned him to a western satellite, a sentence reserved for criminals and raiders.

Now, ten years later, the draft board calls Portia’s name. She hoped it would.

Unlike Darius, she wants to reform the system to make changes that will help the people. If she completes her Revisionary training and earns the Dome seat in her profession, she intends to rewrite the satellite rules to bring back Darius, and for that matter, other unfairly sentenced prisoners.

However, she soon discovers that citizens like Darius aren’t the only ones who need saving, and Portia must decide if it’s better to rewrite the rules or break them like her brother did.

Coming Soon

Fairly soon, I’ll be able to share a sneak preview of my cover. There’s a neat story behind it that I can’t wait to tell you!

In the coming weeks, I also want to introduce you to Portia, my heroine. In the meantime, here’s a trivia question for you:

Portia shares a name with a character from a famous play. Who wrote it, and what was the play’s title?

Also, if you have any questions you’d like me to answer in my next update, please leave a comment below. I look forward to hearing from you!
